Starting Year 11 in September? 4 Easy Ways to Get Ahead in GCSE English

If you’re about to start Year 11, you might be hearing a lot about mocks, coursework and final exams. Don’t worry: it’s all very manageable if you get organised early.

The summer break is the perfect time to set yourself up for a great start in September. As a former Head of English and GCSE examiner, here are four simple ways to boost your GCSE English skills over the holidays without giving up your summer fun

1. Revisit Your Set Texts

Whether it’s Macbeth, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls or your poetry anthology, give your Literature texts a quick review. If you don’t fancy reading them all again, watch a good film or stage version.

2. Learn Five Key Quotes

Just five. Choose five important quotes for each Literature text and write them on flashcards or your phone. Learning these now saves last-minute stress before mocks.

3. Practise Short Writing Tasks

Creative writing makes up half your English Language mark. Try story openings, film reviews, or descriptions of places you visit over the summer.

4. Time Yourself on an Extract

Pick a reading extract from BBC Bitesize or a past paper and practise answering one Language Paper 1 question against the clock.

Final Thoughts

Year 11 might seem daunting, but you’ll feel much better going in with a few of these small tasks under your belt.
