Book Review: Wonder by R.J. Palacio (Why KS3 Students Should Read It)

If you’re after a book that’s heartwarming, funny, a little sad and completely unforgettable, Wonder by R.J. Palacio should be at the top of your reading list. It’s one of those stories that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Whether you’re in Year 7, 8 or 9, this is a brilliant book to pick up, especially if you enjoy stories about friendship, kindness and standing up for what’s right.

Wonder is a moving, funny and unforgettable book that KS3 students connect with…full of heart and powerful lessons about kindness.

What Is Wonder About?

Wonder tells the story of August Pullman, or ‘Auggie’, a 10-year-old boy born with a facial difference that means he looks different from other children. After years of being home-schooled, Auggie starts school for the first time and faces a mix of curiosity, cruelty and kindness from his new classmates.

The book follows his experiences as he navigates friendships, bullying and what it means to be brave.

Why KS3 Students Will Love It

  • It’s emotional (in the best way): You’ll laugh, you’ll probably cry a bit, and you’ll definitely cheer for Auggie.

  • It teaches important lessons: About kindness, empathy, courage and not judging people by how they look.

  • The characters feel real: From Auggie’s brilliant best friend Jack Will to his kind-hearted sister Via and the unforgettable Mr Browne with his precepts.

  • It’s an easy read: The chapters are short, the language is simple and it’s one of those books you don’t want to put down.

Favourite Quote

“When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.”

One of the book’s most famous lines, and a brilliant motto for life.

Would I Recommend It?

Absolutely. Whether you’ve already read it in class or you’ve heard people talking about it, Wonder is well worth reading for yourself. It’s uplifting, important and reminds you that kindness matters more than anything.
